A Polariscope operates on the principle of birefringence, where polarized light passes through a transparent material to detect internal stresses. The instrument consists of two polarized filters—one at the light source and another at the viewing end. When a PET preform or glass sample is placed between these filters, any internal strain alters the refractive index, creating visible color patterns or dark areas. These patterns help manufacturers identify defects and ensure material quality. Presto’s Polariscope strain viewer is widely used for quality control in PET and glass industries, providing accurate and non-destructive stress analysis.
· ASTM D 4093 -Analysis of Birefringence and Residual Strains in Transparent or Translucent Plastic Materials
This test method covers measurements of direction of principal strains, and the photo elastic retardation, using a compensator, for the purpose of analysing strains in transparent or translucent plastic materials.
The birefringence of oriented polymers can be related to orientation, shrinkage, etc. The measurements of birefringence aid in characterization of these polymers.
Setup of Apparatus
Light Source:
Transmitted-Light Set-Up—LED light with Sodium lamp has been used to provide polarised light. To ensure adequate brightness, minimum illumination required is 0.3 W/in.2 (0.0465 W/cm2).
Need to focus on no visible non uniformity, dark or bright spots. Hence light source should be as per standard. Light source must be selected to provide a color temperature no lower than 3150 K. With a standardised Lux meter.
Polarizer—
Position the sample in crossed position from the light source as per ASTM D4093.
Standard has mentioned 45° and 90° retardation analysis setup for checking residual stress.

Presto presents Polariscope Strain viewer, a high-quality testing instrument that is used for checking the quality of PET preforms. It works on the principle that any change in the refractive index of a material indicates strain in that material, which affects the quality of the material.
Presto offers two models of Polariscope for preform equipment namely, Polariscope DX and Polariscope Computerized that are made from best quality of raw materials for long service life and high level of precision. Presto offers a variety of sizes and designs Polariscope for glass and preform according to requirements of our clients.
Presto’s Polariscope is a strain viewer for glass and PET Preform that is provided with a metallic base and is painted in autumn gray and blue colour. Along with that, it is also provided with zinc/chrome plating which provides the equipment, excellent resistance to corrosion. A user manual and a calibration certificate are provided with the instrument, which is traceable to Labs approved by NABL. With these features and specifications, Presto offers a robust and precise solution to check the quality of the PET preforms used in the plastic industry and that also at very competitive prices.
Presto’s Polariscope strain viewer plays an important role in ensuring the quality and durability of PET preforms and glass products. By using polarized light, this advanced stress analysis device helps detect defects and inconsistencies that could impact the strength and integrity of the material. The birefringence tester effectively highlights internal stresses, allowing manufacturers to take corrective actions before production issues arise.
Designed to meet diverse industry requirements, Presto offers Polariscope DX and Polariscope Computerized models, each crafted with precision and durability. These models provide non-destructive testing (NDT) capabilities, ensuring that PET bottles and glass materials maintain the highest quality standards.
With applications in the packaging, beverage, and plastics industries, this optical strain analysis tool is indispensable for manufacturers looking to enhance product reliability. Whether it's PET bottle strain analysis, glass stress detection, or birefringence measurement, Presto’s Polariscope ensures accurate and consistent results.
Invest in Presto’s Polariscope to maintain quality control in PET preform manufacturing and achieve superior product performance at competitive prices.
